5 Red Sox Playing Their Final Home Series in Boston
3. Luis Garcia, RHP
The Red Sox attempted to bolster their bullpen ahead of this year's trade deadline by acquiring RHP Luis Garcia from the Los Angeles Angels. It was a deal that made a ton of sense at the time as the 37-year-old veteran had pitched to a 3.71 ERA and 1.168 WHIP in 45 relief appearances with the Angels.
Unfortunately, though, Garcia's time in Boston has been nothing short of a disaster. The Dominican righty has tallied a 9.49 ERA in 12 appearances after surrendering 13 earned runs and four homers on 21 hits across 12 1/3 innings.
Making matters worse is that Garcia has been banged up since arriving in town. He missed the majority of September with elbow inflammation and even though he returned to the lineup on Sunday, he might not have enough time remaining to prove to the Red Sox that he deserves a 2025 contract.
Ageing, declining pitchers like Garcia are easily replaceable — both internally and via free agency. Unless the Red Sox see something in him that most fans don't, it's best not to expect to see him back in the bullpen next year.
