6 Patriots Playing for Their Jobs in Training Camp
4. Trysten Hill, DL
While plenty of second-round picks have gone on to enjoy fruitful NFL careers, that hasn't been the case for Trysten Hill. The former 2019 58th-overall selection has struggled to find a home in his early career, having played just 32 games (5 starts) with three different franchises across five seasons.
The ex-Central Florida defender made his way to New England as a practice squad member back in October. His lone appearance came in a Week 7 victory over the rival Buffalo Bills, failing to register any statistic while playing just four defensive snaps.
Even though the Patriots brought Hill back on a future contract at the start of the offseason, he likely won't be sticking around. New England has plenty of edge talent on the perimeter and it's high unlikely that the 26-year-old will outperform the likes of Keion White, Christian Barmore, Deatrich Wise Jr., and Armon Watts anytime soon.
Some players can earn roster spots just by their track record, which is also something Hill lacks. He's only tallied 27 solo tackles (and eight misses) with 1.5 sacks across 736 career defensive snaps. Rather than looking like a former Day 2 pick, the Lee, FL native looks like he doesn't belong anywhere but on the bench going forward.
Considering how the Patriots are fairly set up front, it's going to take a lot for Hill to prove that he belongs in the mix. Perhaps more than he can even offer.
