Another Ex-Patriots QB Cut Ahead of Roster Deadline
By Cem Yolbulan
As Patriots fans are laser-focused on their own quarterback situation, teams around the NFL are also figuring out their rotation for next season. As rosters get cut from 90 to 53 by Tuesday's deadline, there will be plenty of quarterbacks and former Patriots hitting the waiver wire. Nathan Rourke was one of the earliest cuts in training camp before heading back to the CFL. Now, another failed Patriots quarterback couldn't make the final cut.
Matt Corral, who the Patriots claimed off waivers after he was released by the Panthers last season, failed to make his NFL debut in New England, either. After having a brief but successful stint in the UFL earlier this year, he signed with the Vikings. His tenure in Minnesota didn't last long as he was among the first batch of roster cuts.
NFL News: Vikings Cut Former Patriots QB Matt Corral
Corral has had an unlucky start to his NFL career. After being a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, he suffered a Lisfranc injury in a preseason game against the Patriots. He ended up missing his entire rookie season and never got a chance to establish his career, which was made even more difficult when the Panthers drafted Bryce Young a year later.
The fact that Corral wasn't able to beat out the competition in Minnesota is somewhat concerning. After their prized rookie J.J. McCarthy ended up on Injured Reserve, the Vikings have one of the worst quarterback rooms in the league. Sam Darnold is the projected starter with Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall as presumptive backups. That is as favorable of a unit to crack as any in the league.
The former Ole Miss star will likely end up on a practice squad somewhere to start the season. Perhaps the Vikings will try to get him back but it's obvious that Corral will have to wait a little longer to make his NFL debut.
