The New England Patriots are finally opening the 2024 NFL season with their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. One of the contenders for the AFC championship with Joe Burrow healthy again, the Bengals offer a tough challenge for Jerod Mayo in his first game as a head coach.

Fortunately for the Patriots, however, they may catch a lucky break as the Bengals are embroiled in drama surrounding one of their stars. Ja'Marr Chase, the best offensive weapon in Cincinnati, continues to skip practice as he awaits a contract extension. He was reportedly in street clothes for Monday's practice and head coach Zac Taylor wasn't particularly optimistic about Chase's status for the Patriots game.

NFL News: Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase's Status Uncertain for Week 1

Chase and the Bengals have been in contract negotiations all offseason but despite reported progress, there hasn't been an official extension. The three-time Pro Bowler reportedly wants a larger annual salary than the highest-paid WR in the league Justin Jefferson.

One can easily argue that the former LSU star has earned himself that contract as he is coming off his third straight 1,000+ receiving yards season.

At this point, Chase should be considered day-to-day. Wednesday marks the first of three official game-week practices. If he were there in street clothes once again, that would signal that he is likely not playing on Sunday.

Despite uncertainty around Chase's status, the Bengals are -9.5 favorites against the Patriots on FanDuel Sportsbook. Whether or not the star WR suits up, Jerod Mayo and the new-look Pats will have a mountain to climb at Paycor Stadium.
