Bill Belichick's Caleb Williams Comments Prove Why He's No Longer Coaching
By Cem Yolbulan
Even though the New England Patriots are about to embark on their first season in 24 years without Bill Belichick in charge, fans will be hearing from him throughout the season. The 72-year-old legend has multiple media gigs where he will be offering his analysis. His most recent take on Inside the NFL about quarterback sensation Caleb Williams gave us a glimpse of what to expect from Belichick as an NFL commentator.
In his latest TV appearance, Belichick said that he wasn't particularly impressed with the No. 1 overall pick. Questioning Williams' accuracy, he said that outside of a few highlight plays, the Bears star wasn't that good in the two preseason games.
NFL News: Bill Belichick Not Impressed By Caleb Williams
Patriots fans are all too familiar with Belichick and his curmudgeonly ways. He is never easily impressed but this statement really misses the mark and sheds light on perhaps why he is currently not employed by an NFL team.
After parting ways with the Patriots, Belichick spent the offseason looking for his next coaching gig. He interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons but they decided to go with Raheem Morris. Belichick didn't have many suitors besides the Falcons.
The reason could be that the modern NFL game has passed him by. Not liking Caleb Williams when you started Mac Jones at quarterback in 25 games in the last two seasons while having some of the worst offenses in the league is certainly a choice.
In his final five years in New England, Belichick drafted four quarterbacks: Bailey Zappe, Mac Jones, Jarrett Stidham, and Danny Etling. His track record in the last few drafts and offseasons speaks for themselves. In the four seasons without Tom Brady, the Patriots had an above-average offense just once.
Bill Belichick is one of the most important figures ever in football. However, being the greatest coach of all time doesn't always make one a great analyst. How he fares in his new role remains to be seen but he may not be off to a great start.
