Celtics Star to Receive Largest Deal in NBA History
By Ryan Bunton
The Boston Celtics set several NBA records on their way to the 2024 NBA title. Newly crowned NBA champion Jayson Tatum made a little more history on Monday, as the superstar agreed to a five-year, $314 million deal. The deal keeps Tatum in Boston through 2029 and includes a player option for the 2029-30 season.
Per NBA rules, Tatum was eligible to sign a supermax extension after he was named to an All-NBA first team in 2022-23. Tatum has been named to five All-Star games and three All-NBA first teams.
Tatum's massive extension surpasses teammate and Finals MVP Jaylen Brown's $304 million record-setting supermax extension last offseason. The Celtics now possess the two highest total contracts in league history. No wonder Wyc Grousebeck is ready to sell.
Celtics News: Jayson Tatum to Receive Largest Deal in NBA History
The 26-year-old Tatum has played seven seasons for the Celtics since he was selected third overall out of Duke in the 2017 NBA Draft. In his career, the Duke product has averaged 26.9 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
Earlier on Monday, the Boston Celtics agreed to a four-year, $126 million extension for guard Derrick White. Tatum's deal does not kick in until 2025. When it does, Boston's payroll could be the richest in NBA history. The core of Tatum, Brown, White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis have contracts that add up to $939 million.
With the extension of Derrick White and Jayson Tatum, Boston's to-do list for their front office is relatively complete only a few weeks after the end of their season. The C's will make some moves around the margins, but Brad Stevens and Co. have shown every intention of paying up and retaining their top talent for a run at Banner 19 with this same core intact.
