Celtics Trying to Keep Joe Mazzulla Happy with Latest Addition to Coaching Staff
By Cem Yolbulan
The Boston Celtics had one of the most dominant seasons in recent NBA history, going 64-18 during the regular season and 16-3 in the playoffs to win the 18th championship in franchise history. Since then, the Boston Celtics have been enjoying their offseason, signing their core players to multi-year extensions and keeping the roster together for another title run next year.
Naturally, the franchise wants to keep their head coach Joe Mazzulla as happy as possible as well. Since unexpectedly taking over as the head coach in the 2022 offseason, Mazzulla has taken the league by storm, putting together some of the most impressive coaching performances from a first-time head coach.
To make his job easier for him, the Celtics are surrounding Mazzulla with familiar faces that he can trust. In addition to God Shammgod Jr. who played for Mazzula at Fairmont State, the Celtics are also hiring Da'Sean Butler, according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe.
"God Shammgod Jr. and Da’Sean Butler, who both have strong ties to Mazzulla, are likely to join the staff in player development and video coordinator roles."

Butler played with Mazzulla at West Virginia between 2006 and 2010 before having a long and productive professional career overseas. In recent years, he has worked as an assistant coach with the New York Knicks and West Virginia.
According to the reporting, Shammgod Jr. and Butler are likely going to be involved in player development and video coordinator roles.
Mazzulla's top assistant from last season Charles Lee was hired to be the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets earlier in the offseason. Fortunately, the Celtics are retaining Sam Cassell, who has been a key figure on the coaching staff and he will likely have an expanded role under Mazzulla next season.
