Despite the trade deadline being in the rearview mirror, that hasn't stopped rumors from sprouting with the offseason approaching. On Wednesday, one shocking report claimed there's been some buzz regarding a potential deal between the New England Patriots and Washington Commanders involving head coach Bill Belichick.

However, we now have conflicting information on that rumor.

JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington says he "checked in with a few people" regarding the Commanders-Belichick buzz. They claimed there's "no truth" to anything involving the two parties and it "has not been discussed."

While this might put this particular topic to bed, this just speaks to the Patriots' uncertainty at head coach past the 2023 season. This campaign has brought to light Belichick's clear failures over the past few years, with his inability to bring in talent chief among them.

Though it's been noted recently that Belichick signed a contract extension, New England's performance in 2023 should make owner Robert Kraft seriously consider a change. The lack of success post-Tom Brady, despite the team having the resources to improve, has been incredibly disappointing.

That being said, there's no reason to move on from Belichick for nothing. If the 71-year-old still wants to keep coaching in 2024, it'd be no surprise if a few franchises planning to move on from their current HCs would like to explore a potential deal.

While not the most common, a few head coach trades have been pulled off in recent memory. Belichick was involved in one himself that got him to New England in the first place. Just this past offseason, Sean Payton netted the New Orleans Saints a first- and second-round pick when he was sent to the Denver Broncos (along with a third-rounder).

Trading Belichick would mean a full-fledged reset in New England, so nabbing some top draft capital in exchange for him makes a ton of sense, if Kraft opts to go that route.
