On the New England Patriots' latest voluntary OTA practice, rookie Drake Maye saw his role expand as he took reps after Jacoby Brissett. The young quarterback saw 14 total snaps in the live team periods during practice. Even though this is a great sign as he gets acclimated to the team, the rookie didn't exactly impress with the chance he got.

Let's get this straight right now: this doesn't mean anything. This is voluntary OTAs and the first time Maye is throwing to his new teammates in practice open to media.

But, it turns out Maye may need some time before he looks like the QB1 for this team going forward. According to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Maye threw a couple of interceptions in full-team periods. Evan Lazar of Patriots.com confirmed this reporting, saying that the rookie overthrew a pass on a flood concept in team drills.

Patriots News: Drake Maye Throws Couple of Interceptions in Team Drills

There are understandably a few Patriots fans who immediately thought of the worst possible scenario. The failure of the Mac Jones experiment is too fresh in some fans' minds. It is easy to see this if you look at replies on Patriots' social media accounts.

This is not unexpected. The fact that Maye needed some time before taking over Jacoby Brissett in the QB hierarchy was obvious. Everything head coach Jerod Mayo has said since Maye was drafted indicated that.

Therefore, Patriots fans need to be patient. There is no need for concern. Drake Maye is not Mac Jones. At least not yet.
