Drake Maye Might Have Just Passed Bailey Zappe on the Depth Chart
The New England Patriots have been one of the teams in the league that has experienced the most turnaround this offseason. It started at the top when they relieved Bill Belichick and replaced him with Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf.
The Pats then traded away Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars before nabbing Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
New England has veteran Jacoby Brissett on the roster but the latest news reveals that Maye may have jumped Bailey Zappe on the depth chart.
Patriots News: Drake Maye Was Taking Reps As QB2
The Patriots have OTAs still taking place with mandatory minicamps slated to run from June 11-13.
Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald was at practice on June 4 and revealed that Maye was taking second-team reps behind Brissett. That was a change because prior to today's practice, Maye took snaps behind both Brissett and Bailey Zappe.
This is already a good sign as Maye is expected to be the next franchise quarterback of the Patriots. Luckily for him, he doesn't need to be thrust into the starting lineup but the UNC product is easily the most talented quarterback on the roster.
Maye stands at 6'4 and has great athleticism to extend plays behind the line of scrimmage or can pick up easy yards with his legs. The North Carolina native owns a strong arm to make all the throws needed but needs to use all these practice reps to his advantage.
Learning from a veteran like Brissett will definitely help Maye grow as a quarterback and it looks like he's already looking better than Zappe in his limited practice reps.
