The New England Patriots made the expected decision and named Jacoby Brissett their starting quarterback to begin the season. As head coach Jerod Mayo was hinting all offseason, the Patriots have no intention of rushing their prized rookie, despite a strong preseason performance.

Even though that is a disappointing decision for Patriots fans who want to see their future franchise QB in action, Maye himself had the perfect reaction to the decision. Stating that he is not disappointed as he understood the situation, Maye said that he would continue preparing like he is the QB1, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald.

Drake Maye Makes First Comments on Not Being Starter in Week 1

This was likely a conversation between Maye and the Patriots' top brass for a long time. It's hard to imagine that the 21-year-old was caught off guard by the announcement. He also probably realizes that his starting is more of a question of when rather than if.

One of the biggest concerns about Maye at the helm is the status of the Patriots' offensive line. Not only is it one of the weaker position groups on the roster, but it's also dealing with significant injuries. Cole Strange is starting the season on the PUP list, Jake Andrews is on the IR, and Sidy Sow and Vederian Lowe are dealing with injuries heading into Week 1. Mayo had already said that the starting guard or tackle might not be on the roster right now.

Not throwing Maye into the fire in the middle of this much uncertainty is understandable. Once he gets his feet wet and the Patriots have a better idea of where their season is going, Maye will certainly get his chance. And that will be the most important thing to watch for Pats fans this season.
