Final Patriots 7-Round Mock Before 2024 NFL Draft
By Ryan Bunton
5. Fifth Round (137th Overall): Ray Davis, RB, Kentucky
Tight end or doubling up on wide receiver or offensive tackle are potential routes, but Ray Davis gives the Patriots a dual-threat back here in the fifth round.
Antonio Gibson was brought in this offseason as an experienced receiving back, but Davis could be another strong complement as Rhamondre Stevenson's future with the team isn't certain. Stevenson's contract expires after the 2024 season.
At 5'8", 211 pounds, Davis isn't exactly a "first off the bus" type of guy. It is always easy to question how undersized backs' running style will translate to the NFL.
However, Davis ran for 1,129 yards and 14 touchdowns and was first-team All-SEC in 2023, which is typically the closest product college football has to pro ball. In addition to those numbers on the ground, Davis added 323 yards and seven touchdowns through the air. Patriots fans might see some shades of Dion Lewis in the Kentucky product.
Based on Davis' scouting report, there is a path for him to be the primary back down the road, and there is also a belief that he can play on all three downs.
"Davis projects as an adequate starter-level running back who can fit any offensive rushing attack. His scheme versatility, vision, contact balance, and bouncy footwork give him a path to a starting role. At worst, he’s an RB2 and a rotational piece."

Alex Van Pelt has shown an appetite for using running backs as receiving threats out of the backfield, as Jerome Ford had the third-most receptions on the 2023 Browns and the Gibson signing indicates that. Davis would give him yet another weapon at his disposal.
