Even though the peak of NBA free agency and the offseason is finally slowing down, we are still getting updates around the league, including from former members of the Boston Celtics. On Thursday, basketball fans received a shocking update from a former All-Star. Gordon Hayward, who spent three seasons with the Boston Celtics, announced his retirement from basketball on social media.

Gordon Hayward Announces His Retirement From Basketball

After his lone All-Star season in 2017, Hayward signed with the Celtics in free agency for four years and a $128 million contract. His Boston tenure started miserably as he fractured his tibia and dislocated his ankle in the first game of the season. He spent the rest of the year and never looked the same for the rest of his career.

In total, Hayward played in 125 games for the Celtics, averaging 13.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.

In 2020, Hayward was traded to the Charlotte Hornets and the 34-year-old forward spent 3.5 years there before moving to the Oklahoma City Thunder at last season's trade deadline.

After two successful seasons at Butler under head coach Brad Stevens, Hayward became the ninth-overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Utah Jazz, making a name for himself as one of the best two-way forwards in the league.

Unfortunately, Hayward was never able to replicate his collegiate and NBA regular-season success in the playoffs but he will always be remembered by basketball fans all over the country.
