Four Teams Eyeing Mike Onwenu to Begin Free Agency
By Jovan Alford
Veteran offensive line Mike Owenu is one of the highly coveted free agents ahead of the NFL’s legal tampering period. The 26-year-old Onwenu has developed into one of the better offensive linemen in the NFL, as he can play both guard and tackle.
The New England Patriots cannot afford to lose the former sixth-round pick as they will likely have to place Trent Brown on the left side. However, the closer we get to the start of NFL free agency, it appears that the Patriots will lose Onwenu, who could receive a massive payday this week.
Mike Giraldi of the Boston Sports Journal reported on Monday that the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, and the Washington Commanders are believed to be interested in Onwenu.
To no one’s surprise, New York and Washington are among the interested squads to acquire the services of the 26-year-old. Those two NFC East squads struggled massively in pass protection as they were ranked one and two in sacks allowed (Giants – 85, Commanders – 65).
Connor Hughes of SNY.tv also reported on Monday that the Giants are interested in Onwenu as he expects New York “to be heavily involved in the IOL market.”
Onwenu received a solid pass-block grade from Pro Football Focus (75.0) and could upgrade both of those teams’ offensive lines in pass protection and run blocking by getting to the second level.
