The New England Patriots got hammered by the New York Jets on Thursday night, 24-3. It was a complete 360-degree turn from what we saw from the Patriots in the first two games of the regular season.

The Patriots’ defense struggled to contain the Jets’ passing game and the Patriots’ offensive line could not protect Jacoby Brissett. Brissett was crushed by New York’s defense, sacking him five times.

The veteran quarterback didn’t have much time to create big plays in the passing game as he only completed 12-of-18 passes for 98 yards. New England head coach Jerod Mayo decided to get Brissett out of the game late in the fourth quarter and give some reps to rookie Drake Maye.

Mayo was asked after the game if he would consider a QB change. And he didn’t shut down the idea.

However, the first-year head coach sang a different tune on Friday and threw his support behind the veteran quarterback.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not our quarterback,” Mayo said (h/t Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald).

Mayo also said the Patriots will maintain their 70/30 split in starting QB reps between Brissett and Mayo.

If you are Brissett, you are happy to see that your head coach still believes in you, despite the issues on the offensive line. However, it also shows how bad the line is that the Pats don’t want to risk playing Maye anytime soon where he could get hurt.

Maye was sacked twice in his lone offensive drive on Thursday night as the Jets’ defense had a field day against the Pats’ o-line posting 15 quarterback hits. Nonetheless, things do not get easier for the Patriots as they play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4.
