The New England Patriots will conclude their 2024 preseason slate on Sunday night against the Washington Commanders.

Patriots fans and coaches will watch this game closely as several starting jobs are still up for grabs, including at quarterback. New England hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet for Week 1 as Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye are still competing for the top spot.

On Friday, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters that Brissett will start Sunday’s game, with Maye, Joe Milton III, and Bailey Zappe all playing, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Brissett has been the Patriots’ starting quarterback for the first two preseason games, but he hasn’t had many good moments with his reps. In last week’s contest against the Eagles, the veteran QB completed 3-of-10 passes for 30 yards and an interception.

Brissett’s lone turnover of the preseason happened in the first half as he was picked off inside the red zone by Eagles defensive back Avonte Maddox. As for Maye, he didn’t have a turnover or throw a touchdown pass.

The rookie quarterback completed 6-of-11 passes for 47 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. Maye also led the Patriots on two scoring drives, strengthening his case to win the QB1 job in New England.

As for the other two signal callers on the roster, Milton III is a lock for the QB3 job, while Zappe is competing for another opportunity on a different team. However, it's still in his best interest to play well against the Commanders.

Nonetheless, all eyes will be on Brissett and Maye to see how they fare on Sunday night. If the veteran quarterback doesn’t lead the Patriots on at least one scoring drive, the calls for Maye to start will get louder and louder before the regular season.
