The New England Patriots and star pass rusher Matthew Judon are still at an impasse in contract talks as the veteran defender is still searching for a new deal.

The Patriots have handed out a couple of extensions in training camp to Jabrill Peppers and Davon Godchaux, which likely didn’t sit well with Judon and his reps. Judon is scheduled to make $6.5 million this season.

The longer Judon goes without a deal, the idea of a potential trade will only heighten the closer we get to the season. In fact, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Monday that multiple teams have inquired about trading for the veteran pass rusher.

Jerod Mayo Dismisses Matthew Judon Trade Rumors

Before Tuesday’s joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles, Patriots first-year head coach Jerod Mayo was asked whether he’s talked with Judon after his name was mentioned in trade rumors.

According to Zack Cox of the Boston Herald, Mayo said, “I will say Judon has done a great job in the meeting room and he’s meeting all expectations.”

It doesn’t come as a surprise to see the first-year head coach not even acknowledge the trade rumors, and instead highlight all the “good” things Judon has done at camp.

While things don’t look great for the Patriots and Judon, there’s still time for both sides to find common ground before the regular season kicks off next month. The Patriots would rather keep the veteran pass rusher than trade him as they don’t have much talent off the EDGE.

New England hopes Keion White can take a huge leap forward in Year 2, but he won’t be able to do it all himself. Judon might be able to net the Patriots maybe a late Day 2/early Day 3 pick in a trade.

However, if you are Patriots GM Eliot Wolf, is that compensation worth it for a defender, who makes your defensive line much better when healthy? That’s a question New England must answer between now and Week 1 of the regular season.
