The New England Patriots are now 1-2 after starting off the 2024 campaign with an upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

But things took a turn for the worse in Week 3 against the New York Jets. On Thursday Night Football, the Patriots were dominated en route to a 24-3 loss. In that contest, they were outgained 400-139 on offense and averaged just 2.9 yards per play.

After the game, head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about a QB change and his answer was shocking.

Patriots News: New England Didn’t Commit to QB Next Week

After the game, Mayo didn't commit to Jacoby Brissett as the starter for next week's contest against the San Francisco 49ers.

"I don't know. We talk about it every single week, you're competing for a job. We'll get together as a coaching staff."

If the Pats handed things over to Drake Maye in Week 4, that'll be a massive mistake. First off, New England is traveling to play the San Francisco 49ers, who have one of the best defenses in the league.

Another reason that this would be a mishap for the Pats is due to their shaky offensive line. Through three games, they have given up 11 total sacks, including seven on Thursday night.

And lastly, receivers have been struggling to create any kind of separation. Thus far, New England is averaging just 102 passing yards per game.

Why would you want to throw your rookie quarterback into a situation like this right now? Yes, Maye is a more talented signal caller but his development is the most important thing. He's the future of this franchise but having him out there with this offense isn't the right approach.

If Mayo decides to roll with the North Carolina product in Week 4, that'll be his first crucial mistake as the head coach. They'll risk hindering the development of Maye and it's not worth it this early into the campaign.
