Only a month ago, things were looking up for the New England Patriots. They were coming off an upset win over the Bengals in their season opener and the fans had a promising outlook on the 2024 NFL season. Fast forward to today and the fanbase is already sick and tired of the Jerod Mayo-led team.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the team has been the quarterback situation. Ever since Drake Maye was selected with the No. 3 overall pick, the question of when the prized rookie would get the start has been on everyone's mind. It sounds like the embarrassing Week 5 loss to the Dolphins may have been the last drop in the bucket.

Patriots insider Mike Reiss noted a significant shift in Mayo's answers to the QB situation and said the first-time head coach "seems to be strongly considering the switch to Drake Maye".

NFL News: QB Change May Be Coming to New England

Jacoby Brissett has been doing his best as the starter through five weeks but the veteran's best is clearly not enough to get this team to respectability. The offense has been in the mud all season as the Patriots rank 31st in the NFL in points. His offensive line and the wide receivers are less than ideal but that doesn't make him immune to criticism.

In his remarks on Monday morning, Mayo didn't explicitly say that he will make a QB change but didn't entirely rule it out either.

"Look, we haven't had our full staff meeting today. That's a conversation, not only at that spot but all the spots, of how to get better as a football team. We're not playing well. It's not a secret. Being the head coach of this team, I have to accept all the responsibility for that."

Patriots HC Jerod Mayo

That is a big change in tone. Previously, Mayo sounded very adamant about his desire to continue the season with Brissett under center. That approach may no longer be tenable. So, the chances of Maye starting against the Texans in Week 6 are increasing by the day.
