The Patriots' have been a mixed bag offensively through two weeks and head coach Jerod Mayo insists changes are on the horizon.

Rhamondre Stevenson has led a ferocious rushing attack, though QB Jacoby Brissett and the passing game haven't kept defenses on their heels. He's averaged a paltry five yards per attempt through two games, only completing three passes to wide receivers in the Week 2 overtime loss to the Seahawks.

It seems like this team is a competent passing game away from truly competing for a playoff spot. Considering Drake Maye is still riding the bench, one has to wonder how long it'll be before he takes over.

Jerod Mayo Teases Changes Coming for Patriots Offense

Brissett has done an excellent job of avoiding mistakes, though his aversion to risk limits what New England can accomplish. He doesn't have an interception yet this season but with only 270 passing yards through two games, it's obvious the Patriots can't legitimately compete unless he starts taking shots down the field.

Mayo knows this, saying as much after the game. In a surprising turn of events, this looks like a team that can push for a Wild Card spot. The Buffalo Bills look like the class of the AFC East, though Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa's concerning concussion opens the door for the Patriots to slide in as the second-best team in the division.

Entering the season, the organization looked wise to sit Maye and let him develop. If this team has any chance at making a playoff push though, it's clear Maye needs to start. Should the coaching staff decide that he needs more time, Brissett must start taking chances.

We could be looking at a 2-0 football team and one of the best surprises in the NFL if Brissett gambled a bit. He's following the plan, but everyone can see it's time for the plan to change.
