The New England Patriots are off to a hot start to the season and the vibes are good in Foxborough. The quarterback drama was resolved, the Jerod Mayo criticism died down, and the Pats fans could focus on the games instead. At least that's what we thought.

The latest report out of practice suggests that we will be hearing more about the QB competition in the upcoming weeks. Boston Herald's Doug Kyed reports that prized rookie Drake Maye is getting a ton of first-team reps at practice. He adds that the team is still developing Maye to "start this season".

"A source told me that Drake Maye is still receiving a “good amount” of first-team reps, even though he’s the backup behind Brissett. I think that’s a good sign that the team is still trying to develop Maye to start this season."

Yes, Patriots fans want to see their No. 3 overall pick. This season is obviously more about development than results. However, the team performed very well against the Cincinnati Bengals and Jacoby Brissett clearly gives the Pats a better chance to be competitive for the time being.

Brissett has a low upside and is unlikely to make the Patriots offense one of the better ones in the league. At the same time, he doesn't make many mistakes and plays the right way. The Patriots have said time and again that they want to be a run-heavy offense anyway. Limiting the mistakes on the offensive end and relying on their solid defense could keep the Patriots in enough games to make this season interesting.

Maye will get his chances. Whether it is in the second half of this season or next, he will be the QB1 in New England. For now, however, it's best to trust Brissett and see what he can do with this team.
