Jerod Mayo Singles Out One Young Patriot After First Preseason Win
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots finally opened the 2024 NFL season on Thursday night with their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. It was an excellent opportunity for Patriots fans to see the new-look team under first-time head coach Jerod Mayo.
As it was the first preseason game of the year, the starters played very limited minutes. Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye both played one drive in the first half before being replaced by Bailey Zappe, who was booed heavily by the Patriots fans.
The Patriots took care of the Panthers, 17-3 behind an impressive defensive performance. However, one name stole the show after entering the game in the second half. Rookie quarterback Joe Milton was the best player on the field for the Patriots and received special praise from head coach Mayo.
Boston Herald's Zack Cox reported in the post-game press conference that Mayo highlighted Milton as someone who exceeded expectations.
Patriots News: Jerod Mayo Pleased With Joe Milton's Performance
The excitement was palpable in Gillette Stadium after Milton checked in. He had an impressive run in a prolonged 12-yard scramble and looked comfortable both in his throws and in the pocket. The highlight play of the night came when he pump-faked the defense and threw a 38-yard TD pass to JaQuae Jackson.
In total, Milton went for 4/6, 54 yards, and a touchdown, while adding 22 rushing yards.
The fans may have wanted to see Drake Maye more but they were in for a treat thanks to their sixth-round pick. Milton's arm and athleticism have long been strengths of his and if he can sustain the level of accuracy and composure he showed on Thursday, he will quickly make a case to rise up in the depth chart.
Getting Jerod Mayo's stamp of approval is a good start.
