Joe Mazzulla Adding Familiar Face to Celtics' Coaching Staff in 2024-25
Joe Mazzulla has added another body to his coaching staff, and it's one he is very familiar with.
According to Ian Steele of ABC6 in Providence, the Celtics are hiring God Shammgod Jr. as a player development coach.
Shammgod, who goes by the name Shammgod Wells, played under Mazzulla while the latter was an assistant coach at Fairmont State between 2013-16. Wells graduated as the all-time leader in Falcons' program history with 569 assists and 237 steals, and he helped the team to a 102-29 record and a berth in the 2017 Division II National Championship.
After working at Youngstown State as a graduate manager, Wells returned to Fairmont State where he assisted Mazzulla, who had returned as the Head Coach after a one year stint with the Maine Red Claws, Boston's minor league affiliate.
Wells spent the last three years as an assistant coach at Division 2 Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He coached All-American and PSAC West Athlete of the Year Malik Miller, and in his first season helped the Crimson Hawks go 28-2 before the season was curtailed by the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The news of his hiring was first posted on Instagram by Shammgod's father, who himself had a cup of coffee in the NBA and played overseas for a decade. Shammgod Sr. went on to coach player development at Providence University before taking the same role for the Dallas Mavericks, who were beaten by the Celtics in five games in the 2024 NBA Finals.
