The New England Patriots are currently having their mandatory minicamp where the team is getting a final look at their roster before they reconvene again for training camp in six weeks. The three-day camp gives first-time head coach Jerod Mayo and his staff a chance to evaluate the players before finalizing the training camp roster.

It is also an excellent way to build chemistry, especially for a young team with a lot of newcomers like the Patriots. Wednesday's practice demonstrated that the team is in fact coming together.

According to the reports out of practice, the Patriots had some light-hearted competition and controversy to end the day on Wednesday.

In the 11-on-11 portion of the practice, there was reportedly a controversial call to end the day. After Drake Maye threw a pass to fellow rookie Ja'Lynn Polk, it was deemed a touchdown by the refs. The defense, led by Jabril Peppers and Brian Belichick went over to plead their case but failed. Apparently Peppers and the losing team had to follow the game with pushups.

Whether it was a catch or not doesn't matter in the slightest. This is about getting reps with your teammates and getting to know them on the field. Seeing the Maye-Polk connection in action is something all Patriots fans are looking forward to next season. The fact that the two rookies are already building that chemistry is an excellent sign.

Regardless of whether Jacoby Brissett or Maye starts in Week 1, they have a completely new receiver corps to work with. It will take a while to build a strong offense but it sounds like they are building the foundations as we speak.

The New England Patriots are expected to have more of a developmental season in 2024. On FanDuel Sportsbook, their odds of making the playoffs are at a whopping +980, demonstrating the unlikelihood of postseason appearance for the new-look Pats.
