Mac Jones’ Patriots Future Reportedly Already Decided
By Jovan Alford
With the New England Patriots having the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, there’s a chance that the team takes a rookie quarterback and moves on former first-round pick Mac Jones.
Jones has been the starting quarterback for the last three seasons but was demoted in Week 13 this season as the Patriots decided that second-year quarterback Bailey Zappe gave them the best chance to win.
However, as the Patriots prepare for the 2024 season, we should expect them to have a new quarterback under center.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Sunday that the Patriots will seriously consider taking a quarterback. Pelissero adds that Jones is a likely trade candidate in the weeks to come and a good chance he will end up elsewhere.
If the Patriots trade Jones, they’ll likely not get a ton of value back for the former first-round pick. This year’s quarterback draft class is one of the best in recent memory, with talent across the board. Therefore, the Pats should expect a Day 3 pick in return for Jones, who struggled this season in New England.
The former University of Alabama quarterback completed 64.9% of his passes for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Jones’ best season with the Patriots was his rookie year in 2021. He completed 67.6% of his passes for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
