Patriots Adding Local College Coach to 2024 Staff
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots continue to completely reshape their coaching staff under new head coach Jerod Mayo. With the post-Bill Belichick era officially underway, the staff that will be leading the transition is also taking shape.
The new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt just added an experienced assistant to his staff after already bringing in quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, running backs coach Taylor Embree, and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo.
As first reported by John Brice of Football Scoop, the Patriots are hiring Michael McCarthy as an offensive assistant.
Patriots Add Experienced Offensive Assistant to Alex Van Pelt's Staff
McCarthy has spent the past five seasons as an offensive line coach at Brown University. Before that, he worked under head coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter for the Detroit Lions. He had previous stints with the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns as well.
Before making the transition to the NFL, he worked at Western Michigan as a video director and at North Carolina Central University as a tight ends coach.
This is a huge opportunity for McCarthy and the brand-new coaching staff in New England. He was the 12th external hire under Jerod Mayo, so there will certainly be some growing pains. And there will be more hirings to come as the team still doesn't have a wide receivers and a tight ends coach.
However, an entirely new staff on the sidelines with a mix of new and familiar faces is exactly what the Pats need as they kickstart a new, rebuilding era.
