Patriots Coaching Staff On the Verge of Another Major Loss
By Cem Yolbulan
Once the Bill Belichick era came to an end in New England, the Patriots made an effort to rebuild their entire coaching staff. A lot of Belichick's staff moved on to different roles while a few of them stayed in new roles under new head coach Jerod Mayo.
One of those coaches was Troy Brown, who served as the wide receivers coach for the last three seasons. Three-time Super Bowl winner and a Patriots Hall of Famer, Brown started coaching in 2020 but received criticism over the years for the lack of development of the Patriots' pass-catchers.
His role was transformed this winter when the Patriots asked him to stay on in "skill development" while Tyler Hughes and Tiquan Underwood took over as wide receivers coaches.
Brown must not have liked this since he is reportedly considering moving to a new role. According to Sun Devil Source, the 52-year-old is among the leading candidates to take over as the WR coach in Arizona State.
Former Patriots WR Coach Getting Ready to Leave Organization
Brown doesn't have experience coaching at the collegiate level as his experience on the sidelines is limited to his Patriots tenure. But it is understandable that he would want to remain as a wide receivers coach rather than get a demotion in New England to a fluid, uncertain role.
The Patriots are in the midst of an extensive reshaping of the organization and the staff. There is a new head coach and new offensive and defensive coordinators. It would have been nice to have someone like Brown who has organizational know-how around but whether that will be possible remains to be seen.
The coaching staff in Foxborough will have an uphill battle next year. They are currently +1700 underdogs to win the AFC East, significantly behind the other three divisional rivals.
