Patriots Floated as Landing Spot for Big-Name Quarterback
The New England Patriots need to vastly improve their offense this offseason and that starts with the quarterback. They are going to part ways with Mac Jones and will surely be all-in on the QB market.
New England owns the No. 3 overall pick and is sitting on $101 million in salary cap per OvertheCap. Those are plenty of assets to invest into the offensive side of the ball.
Albert Breer was down at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and gathered some insight.
Patriots Rumors: New England A Potential Destination for Kirk Cousins
Senior NFL reporter Breer thinks that the Patriots could be targeting quarterback Kirk Cousins during free agency. He states that New England's new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has a similar offensive scheme to Minnesota's Kevin O'Connell. That is the system that Cousins has been playing in for the past two seasons.
Breer said, "Cousins is seen as the easiest way for a team to quickly fill a quarterback hole, and keep it plugged for the next few years."
He then added in, "The Denver Broncos and New England Patriots are two others with offensive play-callers who, like O’Connell, want their quarterback to handle a lot at the line of scrimmage."
The money won't be a factor for New England. Cousins could be looking to secure a deal with fully guaranteed money for multiple years as he comes off a torn Achilles.
That is kind of risky to give a 35-year-old passer coming off a major injury but Cousins would immediately fix the quarterback woes.
In his 12-year career, Cousins completed 66% of his throws for 39,471 passing yards, and 270 passing touchdowns.
The Patriots are going to look into every avenue to improve the quarterback position and it begins with free agency.
