Patriots Get Terrible Season-Ending Injury News on Key Playmaker Ahead of Week 8
By Tyler Maher
The New England Patriots' defense has been gashed by injuries this season, and the hits just keep coming.
The Patriots are already without Christian Gonzalez and Matthew Judon, among others, and now they're down another key playmaker for the rest of the season.
Marcus Jones Injury Update
During a press conference on Tuesday, Patriots coach Troy Brown confirmed that cornerback and special teams player Marcus Jones will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
This news doesn't come as a major shock to New England fans, as Jones hasn't played since Week 2. He's been sidelined for over a month now and there were no indications that he was nearing a return, suggesting that his season might be over.
Still, it's a significant blow to the Patriots nevertheless. Jones was New England's starting punt returner to begin the season, returning 3 punts for 21 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. Last year as a rookie he was one of the league's top punt returners, leading the NFL in return yards (362), return touchdowns (1) and yards per return (12.5).
Jones will also be missed on defense, where he recorded 2 interceptions (including a pick-six) and 39 tackles last season. He occasionally moonlighted as a receiver as well, catching all 4 of his targets for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Jones' ability to do a bit of everything and contribute in multiple facets of the game made him a valuable player for the Patriots last year. New England fans were looking forward to seeing what he could do in Year 2, but unfortunately they'll now have to wait until next year to see if he can build off his promising rookie season.
