Patriots Insider Reveals Date for Potential Bill Belichick Firing

If the Patriots can't get the job done against the Colts in Week 10, Bill Belichick might not want to book a return flight from Germany.

The New England Patriots to reverse their fortunes with an overseas trip when they face the Indianapolis Colts in Germany for a Week 10 showdown. Patriots fans are dying for any glimpse of positivity as their team heads into the 2023 season's second half with a 2-7 record — good for the AFC's last spot.

It seems like the main topic brought up after every loss is Bill Belichick's job security. Even though the legendary head coach has led the franchise to six Super Bowl victories, zero playoff wins with two appearances since 2019 has New England fans losing patience at an all-time rate.

For those anticipating Belichick's dismal, one insider reports you might not have to wait much longer.

Patriots Rumors

If the Patriots return from Germany with a 2-8 record, Belichick could be fired during the Week 11 bye week, per Boston Globe's Ben Volin. Assuming that's the case, it's believed that linebackers coach Jerod Mayo — who spent eight seasons with the team as a player before joining the staff in 2019 — would be the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

""If Belichick... comes home from Germany with a 2-8 record, I think there’s a chance the Krafts could make the move in the bye week and install Jerod Mayo as the interim coach for the final seven games.""

Ben Volin

It's hard to argue against Robert Kraft & co. if the Patriots do come home with another loss. While Belichick's contributions to the franchise can't go understated, a good chunk of his roster and coaching staff decisions since Tom Brady's departure have been questionable at best.

Besides, the bye week would be the perfect time to fire the 71-year-old if it gets to that point. The extra seven days would give the players more time to get used to having Mayo leading the charge, hopefully helping the Patriots end the season on a respectable note.

But even with this latest report, Belichick's firing isn't guaranteed. After all, it was reported in October that the New England head coach signed a "lucrative, multiyear" deal in the offseason. At the same time, insider Mike Floro now reports that the Patriots could trade Belichick to the Washington Commanders in the offseason.

At the end of the day, we'll have more clarity regarding the situation after Sunday morning. Things don't look promising for Belichick's job security, though, as most sportsbooks are slightly favoring the Colts over the Patriots in Frankfurt.
