Patriots Linked to Recently Cut Lineman Amid Injury Troubles
The 2024 season has, unfortunately, started on a similar note for the New England Patriots health-wise after an injury-filled 2023 campaign. Absences have hurt the offensive line especially, with the likes of Jake Andrews and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. hitting the injured reserve list, while Cole Strange remains on the PUP list.
Considering the question marks on this unit, many have wondered if the Patriots will make a move or two with roster cutdown day approaching. And it turns out, one vet who was recently released is already on the team's radar.
Christopher Price of the Boston Globe reports New England "are one of several" squads that have "inquired" about lineman Dennis Daley. He was cut by the Arizona Cardinals earlier in the week, and after clearing waivers, he's now looking for his next NFL opportunity.
The Pats would be smart to at least be considering bringing Daley in. The 28-year-old has plenty of experience that's valuable to a group that needs players capable of stepping up at a moment's notice, appearing in 54 career games (including 27 starts) over five seasons.
Adding to Daley's appeal is the fact he offers his new team major positional flexibility. The former sixth-round pick has played both guard and left tackle during his NFL career, giving him a chance to make an impact across several positions and fill in if a need arises across the Patriots' O-line.
Now, Daley isn't without his faults. He surrendered a league-high 12 sacks in 2022, and he's struggled with penalties, recording 14 total since the 2021 season.
That being said, New England is desperate for help on the offensive line after neglecting the position this offseason. Daley is one of the better options that's readily available at this point in the year, and the Pats could avoid a bidding war by signing him now, ahead of cutdown day, before other teams get aggressive to overpay for players with starting experience like Daley ahead of Week 1.
