The New England Patriots head into the 2024 season with brand-new expectations. For the past two decades, the Pats have been consistent Super Bowl contenders.

Now that thought process has shifted with Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf in charge of a rebuild. New England isn't expected to be a serious threat next season but that doesn't mean they can't be a competitive football team.

One reason why that can be a possibility is due to their stifling defense. Linebacker Matthew Judon has played an integral part of that unit since 2021 but last season was cut short after he tore his labrum.

He's been rehabbing over the last couple of months and is going to be ready for the 2024 season. Judon is seeking an extension but has come to a crossroads with New England.

Pats News: New England and Matthew Judon Are Not Close on an Extension

Henry McKenna of FOXSports has reported that New England offered Judon a new contract but they aren't close to a new deal.

Judon is heading into the season of his four-year, $54 million deal that he signed in 2021. He is slated to make $6.5 million in the final year of his contract and wants a new payday but that may not be coming from New England.

Judon, 32, might have to get a long-term deal elsewhere. The Pats are in the beginning stages of a rebuild and likely don't want to give out a hefty deal to a player past the age of 30.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection can still be an effective pass rusher and generate pressure. Over the past three seasons in New England, he's logged 84 solo tackles, 33 tackles for loss, and 32 sacks.

Although he is still a pretty good player, it seems like his time in New England could be coming to an end.
