With the New England Patriots now at 2-7 after Sunday's loss to the Washington Commanders, the calls for Bill Belichick's job are only intensifying. With the Patriots on track to miss the playoffs for the third time in four years, a change at the top is clearly needed.

While fans and media have speculated on who will replace Belichick, the organization is apparently eyeing a new favorite based on a recent report over the weekend.

Patriots Coaching Rumors

According to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe, ownership seems to be targeting current Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel as Belichick's successor.

""Two sources close to the Patriots have independently said the same thing: They believe Vrabel, currently the Titans’ coach, is the Krafts’ “home run” choice to succeed Belichick.""

Ben Volin, The Boston Globe

Volin says that multiple sources have told him that Vrabel would be the Krafts' ideal replacement for Belichick, and it's not hard to see why. Not only is Vrabel a former Patriots player, but he's also had a successful head coaching career, going 51-39 and making three playoff appearances with the Titans despite being saddled with mediocre quarterbacks.

Vrabel, who was just inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame a couple of weeks ago, could use a change of scenery after six seasons in Tennessee. He's already extremely familiar with the organization and would be a natural replacement.

This would be something of a shock, however, as Jerod Mayo -- another former Patriot -- has long been assumed to be Belichick's successor. Mayo has served as the team's inside linebackers coach since 2019 and has remained with the organization despite being linked to other head coaching jobs. If New England passes him over for Vrabel, he will almost certainly leave.

Since Vrabel is under contract with the Titans, the Patriots would have to trade for him -- likely a first-round pick. That's not really something a rebuilding organization can afford to give up, but it may be worth the sacrifice if ownership thinks Vrabel's the guy who can turn this ship around.
