If you thought that a 4-13 record last season was the low point for the New England Patriots, you might want to buckle in for 2024.

According to the major sportsbooks, New England is among the teams with the highest odds of going winless in the upcoming campaign. New England is in the vicinity of +3500 to go winless in 2024-25, depending on which sportsbook you look at. They are firmly entrenched in a group that includes the dregs of the league, including the Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Denver Broncos.

While the actual possibility of losing 17 games in a row is unlikely, many other futures bets also paint a grim picture of what’s ahead for newly appointed head coach Jerod Mayo and his charges. On DraftKings Sportsbook, the over/under for wins this year for New England is 4.5, the lowest of any team in the league. Denver and Carolina are set at 5.5, while five teams, including the Commanders and Raiders, are at 6.5.

Only New England is projected to lose 13 games. It's a gloomy prognostication by the bookies that the 2023-24 disaster might be making a repeat performance.

Vegas Knows What They're Talking About

Don't take that number lightly. In the past decade, 4.5 is pretty much the lowest limit of what the books will set for an NFL team's win total. They have only done it sparingly, and when they do, they know what they are talking about.

The Patriots are just the 11th team to be given a preseason win total of 4.5 or less since 2016, according to Sports Odds History. Of the previous ten instances, six have gone under, including the last winless team (2017 Browns) and the one-win Jaguars of 2020 and Browns of 2016. One team has pushed, meaning only three franchises have been able to outperform their projections when they are that low.

This is a damning indictment of the Patriots and their chances this year. Pundits and fans can analyze their draft, their offseason moves, and the optimism they might have with a new quarterback (or an old quarterback established in their system like Jacoby Brissett) and a new coaching staff. But Vegas has the final word, and Vegas is seldom wrong.

Other Futures Bets That Should Concern Pats Fans

Just in case you didn't feel pessimistic enough about the Patriots' chances heading into the season, here's a few more odds to brighten your day. These are according to DraftKings.

Super Bowl Champion: Patriots are +15000 to lift the Lombardi trophy, second to last in the league, in front of only Carolina (+25000).

To Make the Playoffs: Yes (+950), No (-2500). If you think the Patriots are going to miss the playoffs, you would have to bet $100 to win $4. And that kind of feels like stealing $4, to be honest.

To Have a Perfect Regular Season: Patriots (+100000). If you've got a dime hanging around, you could win $100 if a miracle occurs. The best odds to have a perfect regular season are the KC Chiefs (+4000), a situation in which that same dime would win you $4.

Last Winless Team: Patriots (+600) and Fewest Wins: Patriots (+350): No surprise that New England is the "favorite" in each of these dubious stat categories.

There's some money to be made by betting on the Patriots this season, or more specifically, by betting on their opponents.
