Patriots Have Perfect Trade Opportunity Ahead of Roster Cutdown Day
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots have some uncertainty surrounding the QB position. Even though veteran Jacoby Brissett was considered the frontrunner to be the starter in Week 1, Drake Maye's strong preseason may have changed those plans. Joe Milton has also looked good so far in the preseason, showing intriguing upside.
This has naturally pushed Bailey Zappe down the depth chart. The QB1 for the final six games of last season, Zappe will find it difficult to make the 53-man roster this season.
Therefore, it makes sense for both sides to move on. With roster cutdown day a little over a week away, the Patriots could trade the 25-year-old to get a meager return back instead of cutting him.
Bailey Zappe is the Perfect Patriots Trade Candidate
Zappe is one of the better backup quarterbacks currently on the market. He may be getting booed by his own fans right now, but it's hard to argue that Zappe was bad whenever he got an opportunity in the league, boasting a 4-4 record in eight starts.
Plus, there are plenty of teams that Zappe will be an upgrade as a QB2. The Chargers, Packers, and the Ravens immediately come to mind. Los Angeles has the bleakest quarterback rotation behind Justin Herbert, the Packers have Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt vying for the role and neither of them instilling confidence, and the Ravens replaced Tyler Huntley with 38-year-old Josh Johnson who has two NFL starts in the last five years.
Bailey Zappe will likely not net back a ton of value for the Patriots in a potential trade. But a late-round pick from one of these QB2-needy teams is better than losing him for nothing.
