Patriots Rejected by Super Bowl Starter at Position of Need
By Jovan Alford
The New England Patriots’ offensive line has been one of their major issues throughout the first month of the regular season. Heading into the 2024 season, Patriots fans wondered how the o-line would hold up and protect veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
In Week 1, the Patriots’ offensive line played well as they allowed Brissett to be sacked by the Cincinnati Bengals once. However, things have gone downhill since their Week 1 win as New England has allowed 16 sacks in their last three games.
With that being said, one would think that the Patriots would explore significant upgrades on the offensive line, specifically tackle spots. But it doesn’t appear New England will be making any additions to the 53-man roster for now.
According to Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal, free-agent offensive tackles Donovan Smith and Charles Leno aren’t interested in signing with the Patriots.
New England head coach Jerod Mayo hasn’t wavered on his stance about the team not being interested in adding offensive line talent.
According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, Mayo told reporters Wednesday that he doesn’t anticipate the Pats pursuing a veteran offensive tackle at this time.
The Patriots’ current starting left and right tackles are Vederian Lowe and Mike Onwenu. New England isn’t worried about Onwenu on the right side, who has a ton of experience playing at multiple spots. Meanwhile, Lowe is dealing with a knee injury, which has kept him out for the past two games.
That said, Smith and Leno would be excellent options to give the Patriots stability at left tackle this season. However, based on their ages and resumes, the two vets would likely rather join a contender needing offensive line help.
The 31-year-old Smith spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he started in 12 games. Smith was ranked 17th in ESPN's OT Pass Block Win Rate (91%) in 2023.
