Patriots Release Rookie Just One Week After His Signing
By Cem Yolbulan
The New England Patriots are getting ready for their Week 5 clash against the Miami Dolphins. They have an excellent opportunity to bounce back against their struggling division rivals but the Patriots are dealing with their own injury concerns. The Patriots arguably have more starters dealing with significant injuries than any other team in the league, with their offensive line being particularly depleted.
That means that GM Eliot Wolf has to constantly reshuffle the roster. This includes signing and cutting players to and from the practice squad on a weekly basis.
The latest Patriot who was cut was wide receiver John Jiles. The 24-year-old undrafted rookie was signed to the practice squad on September 24th but his stint in New England didn't last too long.
NFL News: Patriots Release John Jiles
Jiles was first signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of West Florida before being released by the roster cutdown day. In Division II with West Florida, Jiles started 12 games and set the program record with 1,255 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He was previously with Fort Scott Community College and Virginia Union.
In addition to the Jiles transaction, the Patriots released veteran defensive tackle Armon Watts who was on the injured reserve list.
The Patriots followed these moves by signing offensive lineman Jerome Carvin and tight end Jack Westover to the practice squad. Considering the number of injuries on the active roster, these players may get a chance sooner than anticipated.
