Patriots Reportedly Close to Losing Star WR Trade Sweepstakes
The New England Patriots have different expectations heading into the 2024 season. That shouldn't come as a shocker though as they are in the midst of a rebuild.
Head coach Jerod Mayo is now in charge of leading this team back into contention but that may take some time.
And the latest report regarding a star receiver doesn't help the Patriots' case.
Patriots News: Pittsburgh Steelers Reportedly Close To Acquiring Brandon Aiyuk
Per Andrew Fillipponi of 937 The Fan, the Steelers are working on a trade for San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Fillipponi added that the 49ers are motivated to get something done.
The Patriots have contacted the 49ers this offseason to inquire about Aiyuk but were told at the time that he wasn't being dealt.
That may have been the case back in June but things change on a daily basis in the NFL. The Pats have been looking for a No. 1 WR this offseason as they made sure to add to the WR core. They drafted Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker in April's NFL Draft.
Meanwhile, in free agency, they re-signed Kendrick Bourne and signed K.J. Osborn. Despite these additions, New England is lacking a true No. 1 threat.
Aiyuk would have certainly filled that void but it appears that he'll soon be heading to another team in the AFC.
In four seasons with the 49ers, Aiyuk has logged 269 receptions for 3,931 yards, and 25 touchdowns, including back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
He is looking to secure a massive extension, in the ballpark of $30 million annually. New England currently sits on $43 million in cap space per Spotrac, so they would have the money to lock him down.
It appears the ball is in Aiyuk's court and he may not be too fond of New England.
