Once hailed as the future of the Patriots, Mac Jones had a hard fall from grace in 2023, losing his starting quarterback role toward the end of last season. With radical changes across the board in New England, what happens to Mac Jones is one of the most pressing questions on everyone's mind.

It is almost a certainty that the Patriots will have a new quarterback at the helm in 2024. The Patriots' quarterback play was among the worst in the NFL last season as Jones struggled immensely, finishing the year with more interceptions than touchdowns and games played.

Jones' performance had reportedly created a spat between him and Bill Belichick as he was further demoted to third-string QB ahead of the final game of the season. This certainly signaled that Jones was likely gone in the offseason. But then, it was Belichick who left, opening the door for another chance for the former first-round pick.

Patriots News: New England Listening to Offers on Mac Jones

Mark Daniels of Mass Live wrote an in-depth look at what went wrong for Jones in New England. The piece has plenty of noteworthy tidbits, but perhaps the most important one for Pats fans is regarding Jones' future with the organization.

According to Daniels' reporting, the Patriots don’t plan on picking up Jones’ fifth-year option. He could certainly remain on the roster on an expiring contract with Bill Belichick out of the picture. He could be an interesting option as the backup quarterback, but the team reportedly "won't hesitate to move him if the right deal comes across their desk."

This makes a lot of sense. Considering that the Patriots' new quarterback will likely be a rookie, a more experienced veteran behind him is a more ideal scenario. And at this point, it might be better for both sides to move on so that Jones has a chance to get his career back on track elsewhere.
