The New England Patriots are preparing to play the Washington Commanders on Sunday night to wrap up their 2024 preseason slate.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has already stated that everyone who is available will play in the finale as the team tries to get answers to the various position battles. One position battle that most Pats fans have been intently watching is at quarterback.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett entered training camp as New England’s starting quarterback. However, rookie Drake Maye has begun to make up ground in the battle after his performance against the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

Nonetheless, fans want to know who will be the team’s starter to kick off the regular season. On Wednesday, Mayo said they’ll know who the starting QB is by next Monday or Tuesday, per Mark Daniels of MassLive.com.

With the first-year head coach setting next week as the target date, it sets the stage for Sunday night’s game against Washington to determine the winner of this battle. Brissett has started the first two preseason games and hasn’t put up impressive numbers.

The veteran quarterback has completed 3-of-10 passes for 17 yards and an interception. That interception happened inside the red zone in last week’s game against the Eagles.

As for the rookie quarterback, Maye has completed 8-of-14 passes for 47 yards. Even though the rookie hasn’t thrown for any touchdowns, he does have a rushing score on his preseason resume. He also led the Pats on two scoring drives against the Eagles, helping his case to be the team’s starting quarterback.

Nevertheless, Mayo doesn't have an easy decision to make, but it's one he must get right to start his New England tenure.
