Patriots Star Says He is Close to Extension With Team
By Ryan Bunton
Entering the final year of his deal, Rhamondre Stevenson spoke today about his intention to remain in New England long-term. Stevenson, 26, has taken the reins as the Patriots' featured ball carrier for the last two seasons.
Selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Stevenson has averaged 4.5 yards per carry and topped the thousand-yard plateau in 2022. His 2023 season was cut short, as he missed the final five games of the season with an ankle injury. Stevenson was the team's leading rusher in 2022.
Stevenson's 2024-25 cap hit is set for $3.3 million, making him the 24th highest-paid running back by cap hit.
Jerod Mayo echoed that he would like to see the team and Stevenson arrive at an extension agreement, while reaffirming that Stevenson will be the team's starting back. The Patriots signed 25-year-old running back Antonio Gibson to a three-year deal back in March.
"You know, we’ll see. I will say this about Rhamondre. I think he’s one of the better backs in the league, it’s no doubt about it. I think over the last few years, it’s been kind of tough on him, as far as getting started. So, I’m excited to see what he does this season. And look, he’s earned everything that he gets. He is our starting running back and hopefully we do get something done."
- Jerod Mayo
Both Stevenson and Mayo both publicly appear to want a deal done, and Eliot Wolf has pushed the philosophy of extending current players. It should only be a matter of time.
