We are only two weeks into the NFL season and the injuries have unfortunately started piling up. The New England Patriots have been depleted on both ends of the field and things took an even bleaker turn on Monday.

According to Patriots insider Doug Kyed, veteran defender Ja'Whaun Bentley will be out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Patriots News: LB Ja'Whaun Bentley Out For the Season

Bentley suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Week 2 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. He stayed on for one more play but couldn't continue. He was replaced by linebacker Raekwon McMillan, while safety Kyle Dugger took over defensive signal-caller duties.

This is a devastating loss for the Patriots, not only on the field but also in the locker room. Bentley is one of the longest-tenured members of the team and has been a four-time captain of the team.

The Patriots' injury list on a short week is deeply concerning. New England plays the New York Jets on Thursday and will likely be extremely short-handed. In addition to Bentley, Christian Barmore continues to be out with blood clots. Linebackers Anfernee Jennings and Oshane Ximines are questionable for Thursday, while veteran defenders Deatrich Wise Jr. and Jabrill Peppers were listed as limited participants on Monday.

The offensive line is similarly depleted with David Andrews, Vederian Lowe, and Sidy Sow all missing practice on Monday, according to the Patriots. The lack of continuity and loss of veteran competence will certainly hurt the young and inexperienced Patriots team as they try to be as competitive as possible throughout the season.
