The New England Patriots' thrilling Week 7 win over the Buffalo Bills proved to be a mirage. The Patriots went back to their losing ways in Week 8, falling to the Miami Dolphins and plummeting to 2-6 on the season.

Even worse, New England suffered several major injuries in Week 8, losing wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and DeVante Parker to a torn ACL and a concussion, respectively.

Given that, one would expect the Patriots' odds to be pretty bleak heading into Week 9, but instead they are shockingly optimistic.

Patriots vs Commanders Week 9 Opening Odds

As of Monday morning, WynnBET has New England as a 2-point home favorite against the Washington Commanders in Week 9.

The Patriots haven't been favored often this season, and for good reason. They've been one of the worst teams in the NFL so far, struggling massively on both sides of the ball. They rank 31st in scoring offense and 26th in scoring defense, resulting in a -90 point differential on the season.

Playing in Foxborough isn't an advantage for New England anymore, either. The Pats are 1-3 at home this year with a -42 point differential.

The Commanders haven't been great at 3-5, but they're certainly a healthier and better team than New England. Their defense is a mess (31st in points allowed and 29th in yards allowed), but at least they have a competent offense that ranks 17th in scoring and 20th in yardage.

Washington has played fairly well on the road, going 2-2 with a +0 point differential. The Commanders also took the Philadelphia Eagles down to the wire in Week 8 before ultimately coming up short in a 38-31 loss.

This is a winnable game for the Patriots, but their roster is already in shambles and could get even worse with the NFL Trade Deadline coming up on Tuesday. If New England ships out some talent as expected, it will be even more shorthanded on Sunday.

In short, the Patriots don't deserve to be favored in this game and the line will probably move closer to a pick'em or favor Washington outright before kickoff.
