The Boston Celtics will start the 2024-25 season with the title reigning champions after completing one of the most dominant regular seasons and playoffs in modern NBA history. They prioritized bringing back the team that won without making any significant changes in the offseason.

The Celtics' offseason was highlighted by re-signing Derrick White and Jayson Tatum, as well as drafting Baylor Scheierman with the 30th overall pick. The rest of the team is back for another run except for Oshae Brissett and Svi Mykhailiuk. Considering that the Celtics currently have 14 players under contract and have a roster spot available, one of those players could return for the 2024-25 season.

Until then, however, let's take a look at the current state of Boston's depth chart.

Starters

Derrick White
Jrue Holiday
Jaylen Brown
Jayson Tatum
Kristaps Porzingis

There are no surprises here. The team that was so dominant last season should be equally good on both ends of the floor next year.

The only question mark here is regarding Kristaps Porzingis. The Latvian big man underwent surgery to repair a torn retinaculum and dislocated posterior tibialis tendon at the end of June. The prognosis was that he would return to action in 5-6 months. This means that he will almost certainly miss the start of the season.

Considering Porzingis' injury history, it would behoove the Celtics to ease him back to playing. He will likely be on a minutes restriction when he returns. Therefore, for the first few months of the season, we could expect to see Al Horford as the starting center. However, come playoff time, Porzingis should be the starter and closer.

Depending on the matchup, Horford can either continue to start or finish some games next to Porzingis. The versatility he provides will be a very important factor for the Celtics once again.
