Re-Grading the Celtics' Last 5 Drafts Ahead of 2024 Event

The Boston Celtics have drafted 11 players over the past five years, but only one of those picks was part of the rotation for this year’s team that captured banner No. 18.

2022 - JD Davison (#53)

Davidson is probably the last man on the bench for the Celtics, but he is a World Champion in his second year with the team. The 6’1” point guard out of Alabama is on a two-way contract, and while he played in just eight games this year at the NBA level, he played in 28 games with the Maine Celtics, averaging 20.8 points and 8.6 assists per game.

There’s not much of a path to playing time for Davison, but he has shown that he can stick as a deep reserve who will hop between Portland and Boston and be available in blowouts. It's hard to blame the Celtics too much for taking what they could at the end of the second round, but there wasn't much new to be excited about coming out of this draft.

2021 - Juhann Begarin (45)

The Celtics took a shot on Begarin, a native of Guadeloupe who helped Paris Basketball gain promotion from LNB Pro B to LNB Pro A in the French basketball pyramid.

Begarin, who was the first pick for Brad Stevens in his role as President of Basketball Operations, played for the Celtics in the 2021 Summer League.

He was almost a throwaway pick, however, as Stevens admitted almost immediately that it was likely that Begarin would continue to play overseas.

That did indeed come to pass. After playing for the Celtics in the 2021 Summer League, Begarin decided to stay in France, and he never returned to be in the running for the Celtics lineup. He played with Paris Basketball until 2023, and then signed a two-year deal with Nanterre 92, a team in Nanterre, France.
