New England Patriots wide receiver Matthew Slater retired earlier this offseason after spending a decade-plus with the organization. Slater didn’t have eye-popping numbers in his NFL career, but he still was named to the Pro Bowl 10 times, was a two-time All-Pro, and helped the Patriots win three Super Bowls.

Even at 38 years old, Slater will found ways to contribute on the field despite the Patriots struggling with a 4-13 record.

Due to his longevity with New England, it’s not a shock to see the former NFL wide receiver sticking around the organization. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported on Sunday that Slater accepted a full-time role with the team.

Reiss adds that Slater had other opportunities that he could’ve pursued but decided to stay with New England. The 38-year-old will reportedly be Mayo’s right-hand man and assist in “people development.”

Mayo and Slater were a part of the same draft class in 2008, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to see them working together now on the sidelines. Slater was seen at the team facility this month welcoming back players to the facility for offseason workouts.

At the time, it wasn’t clear what Slater’s role was with the organization, but now we see he will help Mayo usher in a new era of New Patriots football this season.
