While other teams are playing in the postseason, the Boston Red Sox are still searching for a new general manager to replace Chaim Bloom. Many of their top options have already declined to interview for the opening, leaving them grasping at straws.

A couple of intriguing developments emerged on Monday, however. One was that Miami Marlins GM Kim Ng rejected her mutual option with the Marlins, making her officially available. She's not the only new candidate for Boston to consider, however, as another name is gaining momentum.

Red Sox GM Search

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, Minnesota Twins GM and senior vice president Thad Levine is also becoming a more serious contender for the role.

It's not surprising that the Red Sox are going after Ng and Levine, as both led their teams to the postseason in 2023. While Ng's Marlins took the last Wild Card spot in the National League, Levine's Twins won the AL Central by 9 games before falling to the Houston Astros in the ALDS.

Levine has served as Minnesota's GM since the 2017 season. During his seven years at the helm, the Twins have won their division three times and made the playoffs four times. They only finished below third place once during that time as well, so they were basically competitive almost every year.

That's more than Boston can say, as the Sox have finished last in the AL East three times in the last four years. Accordingly, Levine's consistency and stability likely appeals to them, especially with a mid-market team that lacks Boston's financial resources.

With proven leadership experience and an established track record of success, Levine seems like a great fit for the role. Time will tell if he ends up getting it or if the Red Sox decide to go in a different direction.
