Red Sox Get Devastating Injury Update on Star
By Ryan Bunton
Boston Red Sox fans had been holding their breath since Triston Casas exited Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after apparently injury himself on a swing. Well, manager Alex Cora shared an unwelcome update today.
Casas had returned to Boston to receive an MRI and Cora revealed that his first baseman does have a fractured rib and will miss "an extended period". The team is not ruling him out for the season, but is also refraining from providing a timeframe.
Red Sox News: Triston Casas Out Indefinitely
Casas was a finalist for American League Rookie of the Year and Silver Slugger in 2023 after crushing 24 home runs in his first full MLB season. He finished second on the club in home runs and led the team in OBP and OPS. In 22 games this season, the slugger had 6 home runs and 10 RBI. Casas has been a mainstay in the middle of the Sox order.
As Pete Abraham noted, Bobby Dalbec will be the team's first baseman for the time being. Dalbec has 1 hit in 30 at-bats this season with 18 strikeouts.
Garrett Cooper, recently designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs, could be an option that the Red Sox entertain to help fill Casas' shoes at first base. Boston was linked with Cooper this past offseason and the 33-year-old was hitting .270 with 1 home run and 6 RBI in 37 at-bats for the Cubs this season. He was an All-Star with the Miami Marlins in 2022.
