Red Sox Player Lands on IL With Embarrassing Injury
By Ryan Bunton
The Boston Red Sox have had no shortage of injuries during their cursed 2024 season. Although injuries are nothing new, the Sox have managed to find additional ways to injure themselves - and this one is a doozy.
On Tuesday, Alex Cora relayed that outfielder Wilyer Abreu will be heading to the injured list after he sprained his ankle falling down the Fenway Park dugout stairs on Sunday.
Red Sox News: Wilyer Abreu Placed on IL With Ankle Sprain
Abreu is now the 13th player on Boston's injured list, an unlucky number for a team that has been plagued by injuries all season long. Truthfully, the injury bug began even before the season, when offseason acquisition Lucas Giolito was lost for the season.
Abreu, 24, has been a bright spot in the Red Sox lineup, hitting .272 with six home runs and 22 RBI while making some impressive defensive plays in right field. He is fourth on the team in hits, home runs, and RBI, and second on the team in doubles.
Boston has not immediately made clear who will be replacing Abreu on the big league roster. Outfielder Tyler O'Neill is expected to be reinstated tomorrow after his assignment with Worcester tonight, so he will have a chance to replace Abreu in the rotation.
