After star first baseman Triston Casas was ruled out for an extended period with a rib injury, the Boston Red Sox have been searching for options to help replace Casas' production.
Boston is making a move for first baseman Garrett Cooper, who was designated by assignment for the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Cooper had 37 at-bats this season for the Cubs, hitting 1 home run and driving in 6 runs while hitting .270.
In return for Cooper, the Red Sox will be sending cash considerations to Chicago. Boston is in the midst of a three-game set against the Cubs, and Cooper could make his Red Sox debut against his former club on Sunday Night Baseball.
It's a done deal. Red Sox get Garrett Cooper from the Cubs for cash.

Bobby Dalbec has been filling in for Casas at first base, but Dalbec is 4-43 with 0 home runs and 1 RBI in 2024, while also striking out 23 times.
Cooper, 33, is an 8-year MLB vet who had previously been linked to the Red Sox in the offseason.
In 422 at-bats last season, Cooper slugged 17 home runs and drove in 61 RBI while hitting .251. Cooper won't hit for a high average, but he is a productive right-handed RBI man and will almost undoubtedly give the Boston lineup more than what Dalbec is currently offering. Cooper was an All-Star with the Miami Marlins in 2022.
